Desa Dunia Beda

Overview

If you’re coming to the Gili Islands looking for peace and seclusion but aren’t willing to give up easy access to restaurants and nightlife, then Desa Dunia Beda is the place to go. A small boutique resort on the quiet northern tip of Gili Trawangan, Desa Dunia Beda is a true island getaway that’s big on authentic charm and understated luxury. With just 12 antique Javanese villas (each one decked out with dreamy four-poster beds, outdoor bathrooms and ethnic accents), the atmosphere here is intimate, cosy and rustic – a refreshing break from Gili Trawangan’s reputation as a party island. Here, it’s the simple things in life that matter – like the magnificent beachfront sunsets right outside your door.

As for activities, there’s a saltwater swimming pool for lounging as well as decent snorkelling along the resort’s 170 linear metres of beachfront. The friendly staff can also arrange for island-hopping, scuba diving and fishing excursions. Should you find yourself longing for civilisation however, the shops, bars and restaurants of downtown Gili Trawangan are just a short horse-buggy ride away. Don’t be surprised however if you find yourself slipping into the time-honoured pursuit of doing absolutely nothing – in a resort this tranquil, it’s a very worthy past-time indeed.

What to Know

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spacious, comfortable and beautifully-appointed wooden houses positioned widely enough to feel very private
  • Chilled-out atmosphere that’s perfect for romance, families or just getting away from it all
  • The setting combines the best of the Gili Islands: secluded and rustic, yet with access to downtown restaurants and nightlife
  • Staff are genuinely helpful, kind and fluent in English
  • The waters in front of the resort are teeming with marine life that includes colourful tropical fish, starfish and (if you’re lucky) the passing sea-turtle
  • Ample beach lounge areas face the island’s breathtaking sunsets

KEEP IN MIND

  • The beach in front of the resort is quite rocky with some sharp corals – don't forget to pack a pair of waterproof sandals or booties
  • It’s quite a distance from town through some dark, unlit streets – a consideration for late-night party animals
  • Showers are only lukewarm temperature, although after a day spent in the hot sun this isn’t a concern
  • The location means that travel arrangements need to be planned carefully in advance, but it’s worth it once you arrive!

PACKING TIPS

Waterproof sandals or reef shoes, a flashlight for night time excursions and plenty of cash – there is only one ATM on the island

Desa Dunia Beda Joglo Villa

Rooms

IN YOUR ROOM

Each of Desa Dunia Beda's antique Javanese 'joglo' villas are generously-proportioned and comfortable, decorated with hand-carved wooden furniture, dreamy canopied beds and a massive front porch. Modern necessities include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and a mini-bar, giving you a taste of traditional living without sacrificing on comfort. Noticeably missing is a TV – the point here is to unplug and escape from it all. The outdoor bathrooms feature stone basins, pebble-lined walls and an open-air shower, although hot water tends to be scarce on the island.

ROOM TIPS

Honeymooners should go straight for the Joglo Villas, with their ridiculously-sized proportions and platform canopied beds fit for a sultan. Tucked in the rear corner, the enormous two-bedroom Joglo Family Villas are perfect for those with kids or travelling in groups. Finally, even the smallest Kampung units are elegantly decorated with an open-air bathroom and outdoor veranda.

A collection of antique Javanese villas on the beach with an intimate vibe, worlds away from Gili Trawangan's party crowds.

Food & Drink

BREAKFAST

Desa Dunia Beda offers a small but surprisingly delicious Western and Indonesian menu for breakfast. Think fried noodles or banana pancakes accompanied by freshly-baked slices of fluffy white bread, eggs, tropical fruit, juice and a choice of tea or locally-grown Lombok coffee.

RESTAURANT

Quiet and laid-back, the beachfront restaurant offers a choice of either indoor or al fresco seating. On the menu is a mix of local Indonesian specialties such as Ayam Taliwang, or spicy grilled chicken, along with international fare such burgers and sandwiches. To add some variety, the resort also cooks up a tasty seafood barbecue dinner several times a week that includes live lobster, fresh red snapper, jumbo prawns and shellfish dipped in homemade sambal sauce.

BAR

A small bar in the lobby area serves cold beers, wine and delicious cocktails that can be delivered to your room or straight to your deck chair.

ALSO

Romantic candlelit dinners on the beach or besides the swimming pool can be arranged with advanced notice. Great for a special date night or celebration.
