Luang Say Residence

Imagine if you could click your heels together (just like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz) and step into a sepia-tinted postcard from 150 years ago. And there you’d be: Luang Prabang in the mid-19th century, complete with genteel explorers poring over maps, ladies sipping afternoon tea and the soft tinkling of piano keys in the background, during the height of the French colonial days. But what if you didn’t have to imagine? Simply book a room at the luxurious Luang Say Residence and be prepared to experience a magical voyage back in time.

Luang Say Residence is just barely over six years old, yet with its colonial-themed splendour, it feels as though it's been around for a century. We could go on and on about the exquisite décor, starting with the lobby’s classic chequered floors, antique Marelli fans and grand wooden staircase. Next door, La Belle Epoque Restaurant and the 1861 Bar and Library are all carved wooden panelling, gilded mirrors and luxurious velvet Chesterfield sofas; perfect for relaxing with an old-fashioned cocktail besides the roaring fireplace. Outside, a shimmering pool awaits, while rabbits scurry about the immaculate tropical gardens. Throwback Thursdays never felt as gentlemanly as this.

Then of course, there’s the service. From the minute you arrive at the front door, you’ll be pampered head-to-toe by the impeccably-trained staff, who know when to magically appear with bottles of ice-cold water and even place little gifts on your pillow at night. The grounds may be beautiful and the atmosphere idyllic, but ultimately it’s this attention to detail that sets Luang Say Residence apart from the crowd.

What to Know

  • From your choice of pillow at night to a wide variety of custom-tailored activities, the personalised attention to detail is what elevates Luang Say Residence.
  • Unlike most downtown hotels, the atmosphere here is calm, peaceful and uncluttered, with wide-open spaces as far as the eye can see.
  • Service is outstanding, attentive and discreet.

  • Extras, such as tours and restaurant meals, are pricey compared to most places in town.
  • It’s a little out of the way, and there’s not much of interest in the surrounding area.
  • Surprisingly, there is no spa or gym.

Smart-casual is the order of the day, and you'll probably want a smart blazer or cocktail dress for rubbing shoulders with your fellow guests at the restaurant. Leave the insect repellent and moisturiser at home -- the hotel provides a full set of luxurious toiletries.

Luang Say Residence Explorer room

Luang Say Residence’s colonial-themed interiors continue in their twenty-four handsomely furnished rooms, each boasting polished teakwood floors, four-poster beds, Italian wallpaper and fine linens in neutral cream tones. However, before you worry that it’s all too old-fashioned for your taste, rest assured that you’ll also find all the necessary modern comforts, including flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi,  complimentary mini-bars and a full range of luxury bath products.

At the lower end, each of the incredibly spacious Pioneer Suites are housed within five red-roofed pavilions named for an influential French explorer: Auguste Pavie, Henry Mouhot, Louis Delaporte, Doudard de Lagree and Francis Garnier. Every one features a chic, black-and-white bathroom with a powerful rain shower and separate W.C. Located above the lobby and restaurant in the main building, the four Explorer Suites are the ultimate in timeless elegance with massive outdoor balconies and living spaces, while the grand bathrooms boast luxurious bathtubs with freestanding his & hers sinks. You’ll probably be spending most of your time outdoors however: all twenty-four rooms open out onto enormous verandahs with fantastic views of the leafy gardens and rolling hills beyond.

Five-star colonial luxury on the outskirts of downtown Luang Prabang.

Afternoon tea at La Belle Epoque

Food & Drink

Beyond the main lobby lies La Belle Epoque restaurant, an elegant dining room outfitted with luxe, velvet-lined Empire chairs and crisp white tablecloths. Tuck into a seasonal menu of regional Laotian and South-East Asian dishes, with fresh ingredients harvested from the organic fruit and vegetable garden just outside. If the weather is good, sit outdoors on the breezy terrace with a spot of complimentary afternoon tea and soak up the invigorating mountain air.

The old-timey 1861 Bar and Lounge welcomes you with velvet-lined Chesterfield armchairs, rich wainscoting and a roaring fireplace to warm your toes (a welcome sight during the cooler months). Sit back with a glass of single-malt whiskey or fine wine and chit-chat with your fellow travellers. Don’t forget to admire the collection of antique hunting gear and historical photographs displayed on the walls.

Tuck into an a-la-carte menu that ranges from freshly-baked pastries and tropical fruits to Eggs Benedict, traditional-style noodle soup and congee. Wash it all down with a cup of fine coffee, tea or freshly-squeezed fruit juice.

For the best French cuisine in town, head downtown to L’Elephant Restaurant for a sophisticated take on bistro classics. Closer to home, Manda de Laos serves up traditional Laotian cuisine and delicious cocktails in a UNESCO-listed outdoor setting, surrounded by beautiful lily ponds.

Tuk tuk tours and shuttle

Located besides the main Residence Pavilion, Luang Say Residence's stunning, lagoon-like swimming pool is ringed with sun loungers and palm trees. Pool attendants appear seemingly out of nowhere with chilled towels and bottles of water, and you can also order cocktails and snacks from the bar.

Luang Say Residence boasts a wide range of custom-tailored tours designed to introduce you to Luang Prabang’s ancient culture and beauty. Tour the famous temples, learn to meditate with Buddhist monks or try your hand at traditional silk weaving. There’s also bicycle and trekking excursions, as well as visits to spectacular waterfalls, hidden caves and hilltribe villages. Simply name your interest and the capable staff will take care of the rest.
