Puri Sunia Resort

Overview

The name Puri Sunia translates into ‘Peaceful House of Kings’, and stepping inside Puri Sunia Resort's lush compound, it’s easy to see the connection. Nestled besides a leafy jungle just 10 minutes’ drive from downtown Ubud, this Balinese-owned and managed resort is every bit the royal hillside retreat. From the  swimming pool inspired by palace baths to the spa named for a healing temple shrine, every detail was carefully conceived as a harmonious environment, in line with the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana -- or unity amongst community, spirit and environment.

It might not be the flashiest hotel, but that would be missing the point: the atmosphere here is one of refined simplicity that's at one with nature, reinforced by the sound of river water trickling alongside the pebbled paths and the hum of cicadas in the surrounding forest. Given such a relaxing environment, you might feel tempted to spend your entire holiday lounging besides the pool. However, be sure to take advantage of Puri Sunia Resort's numerous complimentary activities designed to introduce you to the Balinese local culture, which includes walking tours of neighbouring Abangan Village and lessons in crafting traditional temple offerings. It’s a thoughtful introduction to Bali’s world-renowned cultural heritage, one that’s sadly becoming harder to find amidst the island’s glut of modern developments.

What to Know

HIGHLIGHTS

  • We loved the beautifully landscaped & tranquil gardens, dotted with frangipani, cempaka and jackfruit trees and scattered with koi ponds and flowing water fountains.
  • The peaceful surroundings are away from the chaos of central Ubud, yet central enough to enjoy easy access to most attractions.
  • There's a wide range of daily complimentary activities that will help you to explore traditional Balinese heritage and everyday life.

KEEP IN MIND

  • The entire resort feels a little cramped and many rooms overlook each other. It's therefore not as private as many other resorts in the area.
  • Bathrooms in the Deluxe rooms felt rather dated.
  • The pool inside the Sunia Pool Villas has only just enough room for two people to sit inside and there is no living room.

PACKING TIPS

Simple but stylish is the key here -- pack outfits in loose, comfortable cotton and linen fabrics. Don't forget the mozzie repellent.

Rooms at Puri Sunia Resort, Bali

Rooms

IN YOUR ROOM

Each of Puri Sunia Resort’s 28 rooms are simply crafted in locally-quarried stones, homespun fabrics and rough-hewn wood. Inside, you'll find polished terrazzo floors and king or twin-sized beds decked out with mosquito netting and quality linens. Flatscreen TVs, free Wi-Fi and mini-bars stocked with complimentary bottles of water round it off, while the drawers are stocked with useful amenities like flashlights, umbrellas and fluffy bathrobes. The en-suite bathrooms feature a sunken bathtub as well as a separate shower and luxurious toiletries.

ROOM TIPS

The Sunia Deluxe rooms are spread over two floors: those on the first floor have a tiny, private outdoor deck in the rear as well as a front porch facing the main pathway, while those on the second floor enjoy the privacy of a balcony. Behind this, the Nandini Suites have slightly better views and greater privacy (but also more steps to climb). Heading back onto the main path, you’ll find the One-Bedroom Pool Villas with a heated plunge pool measuring 2.5 x 3m, as well as a semi-outdoor bathroom with a massive soaking tub and views facing the jungle. Tucked away in the very back, the sole two-bedroom Nandini Family Villa is spacious and reasonably priced: perfect for those traveling with family or friends.

A harmonious spa retreat steeped in traditional Balinese culture, just outside Ubud.

Traditional Balinese food at Puri Sunia Resort

Food & Drink

RESTAURANT

Located above the lobby, the open-air Abangan Restaurant is open all day for up to 40 diners in a laid-back Balinese-style setting. Feast on traditional Balinese and Indonesian dishes created from fresh, local ingredients grown in the nearby village farms. Terracotta floor tiles and rustic wooden tables and chairs provide a simple yet cosy setting, while a selection of steak, pasta and pizzas cater to Western tastebuds.

ALSO

Every afternoon, be sure to pop down to the laid-back Batan Timbul Lounge for a complimentary afternoon tea. Tuck into a delicious assortment of traditional Balinese pastries and cakes while relaxing besides the pool – perfect after a long day of sightseeing. If you’re around on Fridays, be sure to catch the poolside cocktail hour from 6-8pm, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the rindik, or traditional Balinese xylophone. Finally, for a special evening, the resort can arrange private BBQ dinners besides the swimming pool or in the privacy of your own villa.

Activities

POOLSIDE

Besides the lobby, the leafy Nandini Pool was modelled after Balinese royal baths and is the perfect place to unwind with your favourite book and a cocktail on the comfy sun loungers. Upstairs besides the Suites, there's also a second free-form Infinity Pool that's surrounded by lush rice plants and grassy stone pavers for a more intimate experience.

SPA

Pamper yourself at Puri Sunia Resort's in-house Beji Spa, with two enormous treatment rooms overlooking the rainforest. We loved the coconut tree growing in the middle of one of the rooms! Open daily from 09:00 to 21:00, the spa incorporates a time-tested assortment of Indonesian herbs and botanic plants into their all-natural therapies. Go for the Puri Sunia Package, a luxurious treatment which includes a full-body massage, body scrub, facial, mani-pedi and flower bath…the whole works.

WELLNESS

Every morning, head down to the breezy, open-air Yoga Centre for complimentary Prana meditation sessions and yoga classes. Running aficionados can test their endurance with the resort’s morning jogs through the gorgeous rice fields, led by Puri Sunia Resort's fit-as-a-fiddle Guest Activity Manager.

ACTIVITIES

Want to know the secret to whipping up a mean Indonesian satay? If so, sign up for a private cooking class in Nandini Perawegan, the resort’s instructional kitchen. Modelled after a traditional Balinese open-air kitchen, the old-school set-up includes earthenware pots and even a wood-fire stove for a nice touch. Lessons include a visit to the local market for an immersive experience.

TOURS

Join Puri Sunia Resort's walking tours to nearby Abangan Village and get a first-hand glimpse of daily village life, held every Saturday at 8am. Or take a day tour to the scenic Tegallalang Rice Terraces, the holy Tampak Siring temple springs and Gunung Kawi Temple nearby. From whitewater rafting to volcano climbing, Puri Sunia Resort’s Guest Relations Officer can also assist with other suggested tour itineraries in the area.
