Shivapuri Heights Cottage

Overview

Nestled in the Himalayan foothills just half an hour from downtown Kathmandu, Shivapuri Heights Cottages is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air. Originally the family home of British transplant Steve Webster and his Nepalese wife Neeru, Shivapuri Heights is now a hamlet of rustic cottages spread across a rambling garden that leads down a slope to the valley below. Seven rooms are housed within three traditional red-brick houses, each with the same homely charm and stunning outdoor views. The spacious common areas are ideal for evening chats around the fireplace, while the garden terraces are ideal for kids to run about or grown-ups to relax.

Given the cottages’ relative isolation, off-site activities are limited to the surrounding hills – the main attraction in any case. Numerous hiking trails lead straight from the doorstep and plunge deep into the Shivapuri Forest, a haven for bird spotters and hiking enthusiasts, while a nearby Vipassana Meditation retreat is also a main draw. Apart from outdoor pursuits, Steve and Neeru are delightful hosts and will keep you entertained over a delicious meal of freshly-harvested produce from the organic gardens.

What to Know

HIGHLIGHTS

  • As one of the very first guesthouses of its kind in the area, Shivapuri Heights Cottages enjoys some of the most spectacular views overlooking the Kathmandu Valley.
  • The relaxing setting is a true relief from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kathmandu.
  • A former tour manager and flight attendant, Steve and Neeru are delightful company and will keep you entertained with their fascinating stories and wealth of local knowledge.

KEEP IN MIND

  • The hilly terrain means there are quite a number of steps throughout the premises, including a steep uphill hike from the main road!
  • The shared cottages and communal-style meals may not appeal to shy types or those looking for some privacy.
  • The ramshackle, homely decor feels a bit haphazard and might not be everyone's cup of tea.
  • Access by road involves a bumpy ride along a dirt road.

Rooms

IN YOUR ROOM

Each of the seven rooms at Shivapuri Heights Cottages are rustic and homely. Inside, you'll find basic but comfortable furnishings, set amidst a backdrop of red brick walls (some may say a little too red), and hardwood or terracotta tiled floors. Tibetan antiques and a few eccentric English touches here and there lend the entire place an individual charm, making it feel less like a typical guesthouse and more like a quirky homestay.

ROOM TIPS

The main Jasmine House is home to two of the largest and most newly-renovated suites, enjoying easy access to the communal facilities. Further down the garden, the two standalone Cottages, Bougainvillea and Poinsetta, offer bungalow-style living with several bedrooms, a shared bath, living room and terrace that can be booked as a whole for greater privacy. Finally, budget travellers (or the adventurous-at-heart) will love the newly-introduced tent accommodation: literally a row of tents pitched in the garden with proper beds and a shared bathroom, available during the warmer months.

A cosy, family-run retreat in the foothills just outside Kathmandu, surrounded by garden terraces and peaceful hiking trails.

Homecooked Nepalese food at Shivapuri Heights

Food & Drink

RESTAURANT

Meals at Shivapuri Heights Cottage are served family-style, together with your hosts and fellow guests. The entertaining cook, J.B., will ensure that your belly is kept full with a rotating set menu of simple but delicious homecooked Nepalese dishes – think curries, dal bhaat, rice and lentils, etc. Dishes lean towards vegetarian, with fresh produce grown in the cottages’ own organic vegetable gardens. The occasional English-style shepherd’s pie or quiche is also thrown in for some variety.

BAR

A small bar in each cottage offers a range of beer, spirits and wines. Help yourself to drinking water and coffee or tea at any time of the day.
