Given its cosmopolitan shops, restaurants and nightlife, it's no wonder that Bali's trendy Seminyak neighbourhood is a favourite among the jet-set crowd. And hidden away in the heart of it all is The Colony Hotel, a timeless and elegant sanctuary. Setting foot here is a bit like stumbling across a secret garden: you'd never guess that such a peaceful refuge existed within the chaos of downtown Seminyak. Inside, you'll discover 20 rooms with a classic, Old World charm, surrounding an inviting swimming pool that’s ideal for cooling off after a long day of shopping or sightseeing.

The overall ambiance at The Colony Hotel is one of discreet luxury, further emphasized by its strict no-children policy. Enjoy the convenience of having some of the island’s hottest restaurants, bars and shops literally at your doorstep, including the hotel's own Urchin Grill & Raw Bar. The beach is just a two minute walk away. For those looking for a grown-up and centrally-located spot in the middle of Bali's hottest neighbourhood, it doesn’t get much better than this.

The Colony Hotel Seminyak, Bali room view

Each of the rooms at The Colony Hotel exude a quiet elegance, with muted cream tones, shuttered French windows and classic wood furniture. Flatscreen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-bars stocked with complimentary bottles of water and IDD phone lines ensure they belong firmly in the twenty-first century. The attached bathrooms are equally refined, with their polished black and cream marble floors and powerful rain showers.

All rooms are spread out over two floors overlooking the swimming pool, with the Deluxe Rooms located on the ground floor. Tucked away in the corners, the Superior Rooms offer slightly more privacy but at the expense of a view. Last but not least, the Junior Suites upstairs boast spacious balconies that's perfect for relaxing with a cold drink, as well as a bathtub in the bathrooms. Our top pick is Room 12, with views looking down the length of the swimming pool.

Grown-up elegance in the very heart of buzzing Seminyak, complete with an inviting pool, an excellent seafood restaurant and massages by Jari Menari.

Food & Drink

The tiny Poolside Café offers a small selection of light snacks and beverages for a light meal or snack from 11am until 3pm. For a more substantial meal, Urchin Grill & Raw Bar out in front offers a fantastic rotating menu of seafood, based on the day’s catch. Try their amazing, seared Yellowfin tuna with spice-roasted eggplant and ginger yoghurt; or the sea urchin fettucine with urchin butter and caviar -- yum! There's also a 6-course or 11-course tasting menu with wine pairings. As a bonus, hotel guests enjoy a 10% discount off the final bill.

In the mornings, wake up to an a-la-carte breakfast served in the privacy of your room or the Poolside Café.

We could count more than half a dozen of our favourite Seminyak restaurants and cafes just within a 500m radius of hotel. Starting next door, Lello Lello serves yummy homemade ice-creams and sherberts in a rotation of exotic flavours, while Sea Circus is the best place to gather the troops for a chilled-out brunch or evening tapas. Across the street, the funky Motel Mexicola serves some of the best tacos this side of the Pacific, while a two minute walk up the road will lead you to the oceanfront La Lucciola, one of Bali’s pioneer fine-dining establishments and is a romantic pick at sunset. Turn a corner and you’ll find yourself at Petitenget, a happening bistro-bar, while a bit further along, the iconic names Potato Head Beach Club, Hu’u Bar,and Sarong need no introduction. For more suggestions, the friendly reception staff is happy to help and can also assist with snagging those hard-to-get reservations.

The Colony Hotel Seminyak, Bali pool view

After a long day of shopping and sightseeing, The Colony Hotel's sparkling swimming pool is a sight for sore eyes. Thanks to the strict no-children policy, the atmosphere is relaxing and calm, although the sun-loungers can fill up quickly during the busy months.

Award-winning local spa Jari Menari administers their legendary massages in the privacy of your room or in the hotel's tiny massage room besides the pool, with just enough room for one person. Their all-male masseuses -- don't get the wrong idea -- are highly professional, and channel their strength into their forearms and fingers in a way that's just got to be experienced to be believed.

The surrounding Seminyak neighbourhood is packed with enough activities to keep you busy for several days. Shop till you drop at the indie boutiques along nearby Jalan Kayu Aya and Jalan Petitenget; offering gorgeous clothing, shoes, handbags, jewellery, leather goods and much more. Take a sunset stroll along Seminyak Beach, less than 100 metres away; salute the sun with the enigmatic Olop Arpipi, one of Bali’s foremost Iyengar Yoga practitioners; or treat yourself to a luxurious mani-pedi at Esthetic salon or Amo Spa down the road. Getting There

Thanks to it's worldwide popularity, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) serves a wide variety of domestic and international flights from around the globe, including Singapore, Australia, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and beyond. Despite the name, the airport is actually located in Tuban between Kuta and Jimbaran, and not Denpasar City itself.

The Colony Hotel is about a half hour’s drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, depending on traffic conditions. The hotel can pick you up at the airport for an additional fee of USD 20 per car; otherwise taxis can also be found in front of the duty-free store at the arrival terminal.

In The Area

Shopaholics and food lovers rejoice – The Colony Hotel enjoys an ideal location in the very heart of Seminyak, Bali’s smoking-hot shopping and restaurant town. It's  just a short walking distance to Seminyak Square and the boutiques along Jalan Kayu Aya, as well as a 2-minute stroll to Seminyak Beach.

Many of Seminyak's destinations are easily accessible on foot from The Colony Hotel, although you should be extremely careful of traffic when walking along the crowded and often poorly-maintained roads and sidewalks. Look out for the hidden shortcut to Seminyak Square: just turn left when you exit the hotel and walk down 20 metres until you see the signs, about a 5 minute walk.

Taxis are also plentiful and cheap, and are easy to flag down within the Seminyak area; we recommend Blue Bird Taxi for their honest and reliable, metered services. The hotel's front desk can also assist you with hailing a cab, and can also arrange for a hired car with a driver for half or full day tours around the island, starting from IDR 300,000++.
