A stay at Villa Maly is like being invited to spend the weekend at your stylish friend’s home: one where art by local artists grace the walls, where the staff greet you like a long-lost friend, and where a perfectly-mixed cocktail is always at hand. As the former home of the royal family, each of the 33 rooms are done up with a gorgeous blend of European, Art Deco and Laotian influences. Like any good boutique hotel however, there’s more to Villa Maly than just the rooms: a small but elegant spa downstairs is the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, while the peaceful restaurant and bar overlook the lush tropical gardens.
Thanks to a quirk in the UNESCO zoning, the villa doesn’t suffer the same restrictions as other heritage hotels in the area. This brings us to Villa Maly’s main highlight: a swimming pool ringed with crimson sun-loungers – a rare luxury in downtown Luang Prabang. Finally, let’s not forget the location: five minutes on foot brings you to all the shops, restaurants and temples, while a pleasant bicycle ride will take you even further to any part of the city – to the secret pizza place for example, or the tip of the peninsula to catch the breathtaking sunsets.

What to Know
- With its intimate atmosphere and rich décor, the setting here is one of the most delightful that we encountered anywhere in Luang Prabang.
- The service here is genuinely heartfelt and delivered with a warm, personal touch.
- The surrounding area is quiet and residential, yet a five-minute walk will take you into the thick of the action.
- It’s one of the few heritage boutique hotels with a pool in town.
KEEP IN MIND
- Rooms are compact and the grand furniture can make it feel even more cramped.
- Bathrooms are also tight, and we found the ceramic jars-turned-sinks to be a bit impractical.
Each of Villa Maly's 33 individually-decorated rooms are housed inside seven low-rise buildings. Every one boasts their own unique charm and views. Inside, the romantic canopied beds lend a regal aspect, together with pastel tones on polished teakwood floors, brass-hammered sinks and airy balconies. Original artworks and classic mahogany furniture – designed specially for Villa Maly and handcrafted by artisans in Saigon – complete the timeless setting.
At Villa Maly, no two rooms are alike. For the most authentic experience, go for the Deluxe Rooms located in the original royal mansion itself – the former home of Princess Kampieng, Prince Khamtan and their children. If privacy is what you’re after, ask for the remote Superior Rooms tucked away behind the garden.
A beautifully-renovated former royal residence on the outskirts of town, complete with a pool, spa and unbeatable charm.
Food & Drink
The al fresco Le Vetiver Restaurant serves a small but delicious selection of traditional Laotian cuisine as well as international favourites. With its classic wooden decking and elegant linens, it makes for a delightful al fresco dining experience. Don’t miss the traditional Sindad, or Laotian-style BBQ served besides the pool, consisting of a selection of fresh vegetables and meats that you dip into a coconut-milk broth.
Tucked away besides the pool, the old-fashioned Mouhot Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a beer or cocktail and catch a football game. If you’re feeling tired, call for room service to be delivered to your room, available from 10am to 10pm.
Head around the corner to the UNESCO-listed Manda de Laos for family-style Laotian cuisine and delicious cocktails surrounded by tranquil lily ponds. Afterwards, pop down to the arty Icon Klub cocktail bar to rub shoulders with stylish expats and travellers in the know.
After a hot day of touring temples, Villa Maly's refreshing swimming pool is a welcome sight. Order a delicious cocktail from the bar and chill out on the comfy sun loungers, ringed with stylish red parasols.
Tucked away on the ground floor besides the lobby, Villa Maly's cosy spa has just enough space for a romantic couples' massage or a solo treatment. Pamper your weary limbs at the hands of their expert masseuses, using relaxing aromatherapy oils and invigorating herbal poultices.
In the mornings, head for the Morning Market down the road to ogle at the colourful vegetables, exotic fruits, herbs and spices for sale. At the end of the day, catch the breathtaking sunsets from the top of Mt. Phou Si, before picking up a handmade souvenir at the Handicraft Night Market. If you're feeling crafty, sign up for a hands-on workshop to learn how to weave traditional Laotian textiles at Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Centre.
